Swarm
Zaha Hadid
The Swarm chandelier is composed of 16,000 black crystals which make-up a complex pattern of forms. The effect is of a slow motion, controlled explosion: Individual, organic forms with seemingly little relation are brought together as a dynamic whole in the chandelier. A feat of manufacturing – the chandelier was designed using sophisticated digital modelling tools with each crystal being meticulously hand-threaded.
"The Swarm chandelier expresses the continued sense of motion that is characterised in the architecture of Zaha Hadid. Like a controlled explosion it is a composition of black crystal volumes that are dynamic rather than static. They slash through space creating movement through actual and perceived time."
Zaha Hadid was the first woman to be awarded the distinguished Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Her recognisable and remarkable style is characterized by fragmented geometry and bold fluid forms.
